The snow was flying, the thermometer on my car didn’t seem to want to climb above 10 degrees and the sun wasn’t even up, but I was on my way to Laura & Lee’s engagement session in Chicago. Personally I didn’t think the roads were bad, but the 20+ accidents I saw on the way down seemed to tell a little different story. However I arrived safe,on time (even a bit early) and ready to shoot their outdoor winter session in downtown Chicago. We hadn’t had the chance to meet Laura and Lee in person yet, so it was nice to get to chat in the car ride from their place down to our first location on the lake shore. Nearby Soldier field was being readied for the big NFC Championship game against the Packers the next day (I day dreamed about finding tickets and just staying the night). The snow was falling, the air was cold, but the wind wasn’t too bad, and with the beautiful Chicago sky line behind them, we began what quickly became one of my favorite engagement sessions to date. A couple of great shots later we were back on our way headed towards the downtown when the trees in Grant Park caught my eye and Lee quickly pulled over. We made use again of the sky line, from a different perspective as well as some of the structures and trees. If only they ran Buckingham fountain in January. From there we made our way to the river front, found ourselves dwarfed by the Trump Tower, and ended up in Union Station where we were all able to reclaim the use of our frozen digits and limbs. Like a kid in a candy store, I wanted to keep shooting, there was an endless array of amazing backdrops everywhere I looked and down every block we drove. But I knew we had enough photos for one day so we headed back to Laura and Lee’s place where they were gracious enough to let me set up shop to edit their photos so that we could do a same day presentation. Having brought an iMac, this saved me the embarrassment of setting up a desktop at Starbuck’s, so thanks again guys. Laura and Lee are a really great a couple. I’m excited to share some of the photos we created that day as well as to shoot their wedding this coming July. Without further ado here’s a preview (April got a bit carried away editing her favorites!) -D
